Washers are used to increase the surface area of a nut and/or fastener head in order to better secure components in an application, act as a spacer or provide protection. Washers can have features to improve their function within certain applications, such as toothed washers. As with other fasteners, washers have both DIN and ISO standards for their metric selection. Washers are generally the most interchangeable of the of the fasteners between standards, though ISO washers are often found in the 200HV and 300HV steels, which are required for Cl. 8.8 steel and above, whereas the standard DIN washer, DIN 125, is only 140HV, therefore more suitable for low carbon steels.
